French five-piece post-punk outfit Pales bring industrial noise and trip-hop to Sneaky Pete's in Edinburgh's Old Town.
Pales play Sneaky Pete's on Thursday 19 November. They're a five-piece that came together in 2021, and they've spent the last few years building a name for themselves on stage. The EP CRUSH brought them to European attention, and they've been touring since.
Their sound is a collision of industrial noise, trip-hop and pop hooks. They describe themselves as having no time for classifications, and that's a fair way to put it — the industrial side brings the noise, the trip-hop provides the low-end weight, and the pop hooks keep it from drifting too far into the abstract. It's a raw, visceral approach that sits somewhere between a dancefloor and a basement. The live side is where they've really made their mark, with performances described as inducing an irrepressible trance and constantly skirting the boundaries of chaos. The sound hits hard, hypnotises, triggers spasms and conjures the smells of cosmetics and burning rubber. If that sounds like your kind of night, you're in the right place.
In terms of who they're for, the band is recommended for fans of Model/Actriz, Dry Cleaning and Gilla Band. If you're into that particular blend of spoken-word delivery, jagged guitar work and heavy, rhythmic foundations, this should fit the bill. It's the kind of gig that works best when you're right in the middle of it, so if you're planning on going, getting in early is a good shout.
