The Olivier Award-winning musical Operation Mincemeat returns to the King's Theatre for a second run, telling the true story of the secret mission that helped win World War II.
Operation Mincemeat returns to the King's Theatre from 29 June to 3 July 2027, a second run for the Olivier Award-winning musical in Edinburgh. It's a Broadway hit that's picked up a Tony Award along the way, and it's often talked about as one of the best-reviewed shows in West End history, with 88 five-star reviews to its name.
The story is set in 1943 and follows a true secret mission from the Second World War: British intelligence used a corpse carrying false documents to mislead Nazi Germany about the Allied invasion of Sicily. It's a chaotic tale in which a dead body, a fake love letter and Ian Fleming come together to wrong-foot Hitler. Critics have described it as Singin' in the Rain meets Strangers on a Train.
It's a long way from where it started. Written by SpitLip — David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson and Zoë Roberts — and directed by Robert Hastie, it opened in 2019 at the 77-seat New Diorama Theatre, then transferred to Southwark Playhouse and Riverside Studios before finally reaching the West End in May 2023 at the Fortune Theatre. It was commissioned by the New Diorama Theatre and co-commissioned by the Lowry, and produced by Avalon in association with SpitLip.
