Stef Smith's version of Henrik Ibsen's 'A Doll's House', reframed across three time periods and performed by 4th year BA Acting and English students at Edinburgh Napier University.
Stef Smith's version of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House runs from Wednesday 11 November to Saturday 14 November at the B56 Studio Theatre, on the Merchiston Campus of Edinburgh Napier University. It's performed by 4th year BA (Hons) Acting and English students, so it's a student production rather than a professional company.
Smith's version doesn't stick to one setting. It reframes the original drama across three different time periods — the fight for women's suffrage, the Swinging Sixties, and the modern day — and lets them run alongside each other. The staging is described as urgent and poetic, and the whole thing asks how far we've actually come in the hundred years between them. Ibsen's original portrayal of womanhood caused a fair bit of outrage when it first went on in 1879, and Smith's retelling leans into that history of provocation.
The B56 Studio Theatre is an intimate space on the Merchiston Campus, known for its close-knit atmosphere and for housing thought-provoking student work. It's a small room, so you'll be close to the action. One thing to keep in mind: the show contains adult themes, so it's not one for the younger ones.
