A powerful historical drama set in Tudor England, following Sir Thomas More as he faces a moral crisis under King Henry VIII.
A Man For All Seasons runs at the Festival Theatre from 24 to 28 November, with evening performances at 7.30pm and matinees at 2.30pm. It's Robert Bolt's award-winning play, set in Tudor England and centred on Sir Thomas More — scholar, ambassador, lord chancellor and friend to King Henry VIII. The story follows More as he's forced to choose between his loyalty and his conscience when Henry demands a divorce from Catherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn. More, a staunch Catholic, commits an act of defiance for which he eventually pays, and critics have called the piece a timeless Tudor morality play.
Martin Shaw takes the lead as Sir Thomas More. You'll likely know him from Judge John Deed, Inspector George Gently and The Professionals, and he's also starred in West End transfers of Hobson's Choice, The Best Man and Twelve Angry Men. Directing the production is Jonathan Church, whose ten-year tenure as Artistic Director of Chichester Festival Theatre included directing Shaw in Hobson's Choice.
