A concert by the Edinburgh University Chamber Choir featuring works by Parry, MacDonald, Mealor, Boyle and Oades, including a world premiere and a Scottish premiere.
The Edinburgh University Chamber Choir are performing at St Giles' Cathedral on Friday 23 October, as part of the Edinburgh Royal Mile Chamber Music Series. It's a candlelit concert, and the programme puts a choir, a brass quintet, and the cathedral's Rieger organ together in the same room. The whole thing is presented by the John Armitage Memorial Trust, which supports new music.
The set pairs older favourites with new commissions by living composers. There's C. H. H. Parry's I Was Glad, a piece that's long been a staple of the choral repertoire, alongside Paul Mealor's Ubi Caritas. Those sit next to three more recent works: Fraser MacDonald's On Passing the New Menin Gate, which gets its world premiere here; Rory Boyle's Tallis's Light; and Jack Oades' Between the Stormclouds and the Sea, which gets its Scottish premiere.
On the podium is Jack Oades, the Master of the Music at St Giles, who also wrote Between the Stormclouds and the Sea. He's directing the choir, with Jordan English on the Rieger organ and a brass quintet filling out the sound. The Royal Mile series is now in its third season of candlelit concerts at St Giles, and it draws on the Classical and Romantic eras, with a newly installed Steinway grand piano added to the setting.
