A candlelit piano recital by Ugnius Pauliukonis featuring works by Beethoven, Bach, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Debussy and Beethoven, held at St Giles' Cathedral.
Ugnius Pauliukonis brings Moonlight Sonata at Christmas to St Giles' Cathedral on Saturday 19 December, a candlelight piano recital on the Royal Mile. The whole thing is staged by candlelight inside the cathedral's Gothic architecture, so it's as much about the setting as the music.
The programme is a mix of the big names and a few quieter moments. He opens with Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata op.13, then moves through Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze, Liszt's Sonetto del Petrarca 123, and Tchaikovsky's December from The Seasons. Debussy's Clair de Lune follows, and the night closes with the one that gives the whole thing its name: Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.
Pauliukonis is a British concert pianist who's played as a soloist with the BBC Philharmonic, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, and the Kaunas State Symphony Orchestra. His recitals have been at the Bridgewater Hall, Wigmore Hall in London, and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. He also works as a teacher and a performance art curator, and he's a chamber musician. He's the driving force behind Glasgow Piano Days, a free piano event initiative he runs in hospitals, museums, and public spaces across Glasgow.
