Stand-up show in which Milo Edwards reads the letters his parents wrote to each other in the 1980s and reflects on what remains of a human life.
Milo Edwards brings Catamaran to Monkey Barrel Comedy on Wednesday 2 December, an hour of stand-up built around the letters his parents wrote to each other in the 1980s. It started in 2025, when he found a box of them in the back of his late mother's wardrobe. The show asks what remains of a human life, what gets torn out, and what happens when that life turns out to have been surprisingly horny. Still living in his parents' old house, Edwards reconnects with them by reading the often lurid correspondence, which introduces characters like a charismatic business partner who wouldn't stop boasting about his catamaran.
The material sits against a remarkably grim Fringe career: he lost both parents within two of them, in 2019 and 2022, with a show about his father's death in between. He bonded with his mother during Covid by mourning his father while binge-listening to Radio 2's midday show. It's a lot of personal history to work with, and Catamaran is the latest way he's been sorting through it.
Critics have called him one of the UK's smartest, most vital stand-ups, with The Wee Review calling the work near perfect and The List praising his dexterous delivery and inch-perfect accuracy. If you've seen his previous stuff, you'll recognise the way he handles the heavier side of things with a sharp, precise comic touch. This one is a bit different, though, turning to those old letters to find the funny in the middle of the grief.
