Martin McAloon, frontman of Prefab Sprout, plays 'Steve McQueen' in full on his Slight Return tour at The Voodoo Rooms.
Martin McAloon is back at The Voodoo Rooms on Sunday 29 November, playing Steve McQueen in full. It's part of his Slight Return UK tour, which takes the 1988 Prefab Sprout album out on the road again. If you've got a soft spot for that record, it's a good night to see it played from start to finish.
McAloon is a founding member of Prefab Sprout, and Steve McQueen is one of the most beloved British records of the 1980s. This isn't the first time he's toured it, though — last year's Two Wheels Good tour did the same thing, and Slight Return is the follow-up. Along with the album in full, he'll be drawing from the wider Prefab Sprout catalogue, including plenty of songs written by his brother, Paddy. Between the two, the set runs about two hours, and it's a celebration of more than forty years of Paddy McAloon's songwriting.
There's a bit of a human story to the whole thing, too. Reviewer Peter Freeth described the show as "a masterclass in how to survive the music business and remain human," and that's a good way to frame it. The Slight Return tour is also visiting towns, cities and venues that the first run missed, so this is one of those dates that wouldn't have happened without the second leg.
