Lisbon trio MAQUINA. bring their fusion of krautrock, industrial techno and EBM to Sneaky Pete's.
MAQUINA. play Sneaky Pete's on Tuesday 23 February, their first Edinburgh show since they first landed on the radar. They're a Lisbon-based three-piece — Halison Peres on drums and vocals, João Cavalheiro on guitar, and José Rego on bass — and they've spent the last few years working their way through the European underground circuit. The night is presented by Sneaks Events.
What they do is a bit of a collision. They pull from krautrock and industrial techno, and they throw in EBM and danceable noise, all held together by pulsating beats, scuzzy bass riffs and noisy guitars. It's a lean, heavy sound that sits somewhere between a live band and a club night, and they describe their approach as 'pushing sounds together to make noise and pushing noise together to make sounds'. It's a good way of putting it, because it captures that tension between the two: the live instrumentation and the dancefloor energy.
They've got two records behind them that give you a sense of where they're coming from. Dirty Tracks for Clubbing came out in 2023, and Prata followed in 2024, released on the UK label Fuzz Club. If you're trying to place them, the venue suggests they'll hit the mark for fans of Gilla Band, Kyuss and Pigs x7 — three bands that all know their way around a heavy riff and a noisy room.
