Screening of Bill Forsyth's Local Hero (1983) at Grassmarket Community Picture House, with all income supporting the cinema.
Grassmarket Community Project is screening Bill Forsyth's Local Hero (1983) on Sunday 15 November, from 2 pm to 4 pm. It's part of 'I Like It Here: A New Season Celebrating Community, Human Connection and Love', a series of eight films they're showing in partnership with the Edinburgh Film Guild. This one's being presented by the Grassmarket Community Picture House, and the whole session runs without trailers, so you'll get straight to the film.
Local Hero is widely regarded as one of the all-time greats of Scottish cinema, and for good reason. It's a celebration of small-town, rural life that manages to be both funny and genuinely warm. The story follows a jaded American businessman who's sent to work in the Scottish Highlands, and it's the way he slowly lets the place get under his skin that makes it work. It's 111 minutes long, carries a 12A certificate, and is exactly the kind of thing that feels right for a Sunday afternoon.
There's a bit of a community spirit behind the screening, too. It's supported by Film Hub Scotland, the BFI's Film Audience Network, on behalf of Screen Scotland and the BFI National Lottery. All the money it makes goes back into the cinema, so your ticket helps keep the picture house going. That's why the pricing is a sliding scale: £3, £5, or £7, depending on what you can afford. Entry is free for Grassmarket Community Project members, open door meal attendees, and anyone else who needs a free ticket.
