Guided tour of the 1920s interiors and Japanese garden at Lauriston Castle, marking the centenary of the Reid collection.
Lauriston Castle and Gardens is running a highlights tour on Sunday 18 October, a guided walk through the house and grounds. The castle itself is a 16th-century tower house with Victorian extensions and early 20th-century interiors, set in gardens that look across the Firth of Forth. It's a bit of a climb to get up there, but the views from the top make it worth the trip.
2026 is a bit of a milestone for the place: it's the centenary of the castle being left to the Scottish nation by the Reids, its last Edwardian owners. Because of that, this year's programme leans heavily on the 1920s. Inside, you'll see the collections they left behind, from fine furniture and ceramics to the more personal things — there's even a sitting-room newspaper reporting the sinking of the Titanic. The tour is a chance to step back into an Edinburgh middle-class home of the 1920s, and the gardens include an award-winning Japanese garden.
