Work-in-progress stand-up hour by Krystal Evans about marriage, divorce and money, at Monkey Barrel Comedy.
Krystal Evans is at Monkey Barrel Comedy on Monday 2 November, performing Flower Girl (WIP). It's a 60-minute work-in-progress hour she's building around marriage and divorce, and about having a lot of money and then being dead broke. She says the show will eventually be raw, sexually explicit and humiliating as she tries to make hard things funny, delivered with the dry, biting wit critics say was forged in fire.
Because it's a work-in-progress, you're seeing the material while it's still being shaped. The core is there — the marriage, the divorce, the swing from plenty to nothing — but the jokes are still being hammered out in front of a live audience. It's the kind of thing that changes from night to night as she finds what lands and what doesn't, so if you're into seeing how a stand-up set actually comes together, this is exactly where you want to be.
Reviews have called the work 'outrageously funny', 'pacy and assured' and 'an utterly beautiful show', and describe Evans as a comic on the cusp of breaking into the mainstream. If you've not come across her before, that dry delivery is a good place to start: it's less about the big punchline and more about the way she frames the mess she's talking about.
