Fourth session of the Edinburgh Existentialist Philosophy Reading Group, reading and discussing Keiji Nishitani's 'Religion and Nothingness'.
The Edinburgh Existentialist Philosophy Reading Group is back at Paterson's Land on Wednesday 4 November, with this session focusing on Keiji Nishitani's Religion and Nothingness. It's the fourth week of the group's current run through the book, so if you've been following along, this is where you'll find the conversation picking up speed. If you're just joining in, you're more than welcome to jump straight in anyway.
The group reads books, essays and stories linked to the existentialist tradition — names like Nietzsche, Camus, Kafka, Kierkegaard, Sartre and Heidegger — and meets weekly to talk them through. It's a reading group in the truest sense: people come together to discuss what they've read rather than listen to a lecture. Anyone is welcome, and you don't need an academic background to take part. The members themselves pick the next readings by poll in their WhatsApp group, so the direction of the reading list is decided by the people who actually show up.
Beyond the weekly sessions, the group also runs 'The Nothing Project' and keeps a running list of reading suggestions for anyone who wants to dig further into the tradition. The meetings take place in University of Edinburgh rooms, though the group isn't affiliated with the university, and the crowd usually heads to a pub afterwards to keep the conversation going over a few drinks.

This session runs from 18:30 GMT in Room G.43 at Paterson's Land on Holyrood Road. It's part of the group's ongoing look at Religion and Nothingness, so if you're interested in Nishitani, this is the night to get involved.
