Acoustic show by Brazilian bossa nova singer, composer and guitarist Joyce Moreno, with Baiana, at The Voodoo Rooms.
Joyce Moreno plays The Voodoo Rooms on Tuesday 17 November, with doors at 7:30pm and the show starting at 8:00pm. She'll be performing with Baiana in an acoustic set, so it's just her and one other on stage rather than a full band.
If you're not familiar with her, Moreno is a Rio de Janeiro-born singer, composer, arranger and instrumentalist who's been a central figure in Brazilian music for more than five decades. She's a four-time Latin Grammy nominee with around 40 albums to her name and hundreds of songs written. More than 400 of those recordings have been performed by some of the biggest names in Brazilian popular music — Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Milton Nascimento, Sergio Mendes and Flora Purim — and later covered by international artists like Annie Lennox, Omara Portuondo, the Black Eyed Peas and Wallace Roney.
Her writing has also found its way onto film soundtracks, including Robert Altman's The Player and Legally Blonde, as well as the anime Wolf's Rain with Yoko Kanno, and into television and theatre. In the early 1990s, her music was picked up by DJs around the world, and Aldeia de Ogum became a global dancefloor hit. She's widely regarded as a pioneer, cited as the first Brazilian woman to compose and perform from a first-person feminine viewpoint.
