Conversation between costume designer John Bright and curator Keith Lodwick, accompanying Dovecot Studios' exhibition 'Costume Couture: Sixty Years of Cosprop'.
John Bright is in conversation with curator Keith Lodwick at Dovecot Studios on Friday 27 November, from 18:00 to 19:00. It's a talk that sits alongside the exhibition Costume Couture: Sixty Years of Cosprop, which marks six decades of the costume house Bright founded back in 1966.
Bright is a multi-award-winning costume designer, an Academy Award and BAFTA winner, best known for his long-standing collaboration with Merchant Ivory Productions. He worked there alongside fellow designer Jenny Beavan on many of the most celebrated period films of the late 20th century. The exhibition itself displays the Oscar and BAFTA-winning costumes they designed for the Merchant Ivory film A Room with a View (1985), worn by Helena Bonham Carter and Maggie Smith. The talk is a chance to hear Bright talk through that work and the company he's run for sixty years.
Beyond the costumes, there's a bit more to the story. Bright also founded The Bright Foundation, a Hastings-based arts education charity that provides life-enhancing opportunities for children and young people facing disadvantage. On the night, copies of Keith Lodwick's book The Costume House: The Inside Story of Cosprop will be available to buy and sign, and every ticket sold supports The Dovecot Foundation.
