One-week run of the UK tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera, with Sam Ryder as Jesus, directed by Tim Sheader.
Jesus Christ Superstar comes to the Edinburgh Playhouse from 30 March to 3 April 2027, with Sam Ryder taking the role of Jesus. It's a new production of the rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, and it's playing in Edinburgh for one week only.
If you're not familiar with the show, it's the one that casts Judas as a tragic antihero and builds its score around numbers like 'Everything's Alright', 'Gethsemane' and 'Superstar'. This version is directed by Tim Sheader, with choreography by Drew McOnie and design by Tom Scutt. Sheader's staging plays with ironic allusions to modern life, so it's not a traditional biblical retelling.
The production arrives in Edinburgh as part of a UK tour that opens at Manchester Palace Theatre in February 2027. Before that, it played sell-out runs at The London Palladium and Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Producer Michael Harrison called it an 'extraordinary new production', and it's the same version that's been touring the UK.
