Seven-piece jazz band Hejira, fronted by Hattie Whitehead, plays songs from Joni Mitchell's jazz period at The Voodoo Rooms.
Hejira bring their tribute to Joni Mitchell to The Voodoo Rooms on Wednesday 10 March 2027, with the set starting at 7:30pm. They're a seven-piece band formed in 2023 to work through Mitchell's songbook, and this one's fronted by Hattie Whitehead.
The set pulls from a wide stretch of her career, from Court & Spark through to Wild Things Run Fast, with songs like 'Amelia', 'Hejira', 'Song For Sharon' and 'Coyote' on the list. Much of that comes from her jazz period—the run of The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter and Mingus—which is where the band leans most heavily. Mitchell toured those records with a band of jazz royalty, including Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Jaco Pastorius and Tony Williams, and the live album Shadows And Light provides the bulk of Hejira's repertoire.
Since late 2025, the group has drawn from a pool of three singers and guitarists—Hattie Whitehead, Jana Varga and Immy Churchill—and has played more than 120 shows across the UK and Ireland, headlining at the EFG London Jazz Festival, Brecon Jazz Festival and Buxton International Festival. They released a live album in 2024, and Jazzwise described Whitehead's voice as 'spine-shiveringly like Mitchell's'. Drummer Bill Bruford put it plainly: 'If you're looking for a great evening with the music of Joni Mitchell, Hejira is a top-drawer band... Run, don't walk, for tickets.'
