Guided walking tour of Greyfriars Kirkyard, the famous Edinburgh graveyard, with the stories of the people buried there.
The Cadies & Witchery Tours are taking a guided walking tour of Greyfriars Kirkyard on Thursday 22 October. It's a 90-minute walk through one of Edinburgh's most famous graveyards, which has been used as a burial ground for centuries and is home to 17th-century tombs. The tour focuses on the people buried there rather than on ghosts, so it's more of a history walk than a ghost tour.
Along the way, the guide works through the stories of the people interred in the kirkyard: the lecturer who taught Charles Darwin, an actor buried in full theatrical costume, a First World War ace pilot, the martyred Covenanters, the grave robbers Burke and Hare, a tortured spy, and the devoted Skye Terrier Greyfriars Bobby. The imagery on the tombs is explained as you go, and the company's resident genealogist adds new information every week, so the tour stays current. One of the guides, Robin Mitchell, has also written What's Under the Kilt.

It's a walking tour, so you'll be on your feet for the full 90 minutes, and it runs rain or shine, so bring a jacket if the weather looks dodgy. The walk isn't suitable for children under 12 or wheelchair users. The meeting point is at The Cadies & Witchery Tours, 84 West Bow, Victoria Street, Edinburgh EH1 2HH, and the tour itself costs £21 per person for adults, with all taxes and fees included.
