Bebop saxophonist and flautist Greg Abate plays with the Juniper Green Note Trio at the grassroots jazz club in Baberton Golf Club.
Greg Abate plays Baberton Golf Club on Thursday 29 October, and it's a bit of a milestone for the night: it's the first anniversary of the Juniper Green Note.
If you haven't come across it yet, the Juniper Green Note is a grassroots jazz club in the Pentlands community southwest of Edinburgh, running monthly concerts at the Baberton Golf Clubhouse. The format is simple: each night pairs a swinging jazz trio with a different headline guest, so no two bills are the same. The idea is to keep a friendly, welcoming space where the local community can enjoy live music close to home. The room is fully accessible and there's a bar on site.
Abate arrives as an international touring star of bebop who's spent much of the last five decades on the road. He studied at Berklee College of Music in the mid-1970s, played lead alto with the Ray Charles Orchestra for two years, and formed his own group, Channel One, in 1978. Later he joined the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra. Since then he's built a following as a post-hard-bop soloist, recording more than seventeen albums as leader, starting with Live at Birdland NYC in 1991. He's a saxophonist, flautist and composer, and for this date he'll be joined by the Juniper Green Note Trio.
