Hard-hitting comedy by Citadel Arts Group, scripted from the life stories of local older people and performed by a professional and local cast.
Citadel Arts Group are bringing Getting Along with Gran to the Leith Dockers Club on Friday 12 November, with two performances that afternoon and evening: one at 2.30pm and another at 7pm. It's a hard-hitting comedy that comes from a very specific place, and knowing the background helps you appreciate what's happening on stage.
Citadel is a charity (SC 034687) that works to give a voice to older people by preserving their stories and staging their plays in community venues. This one was scripted by members of their playwrights' workshop, who meet every week at the Leith Dockers Club to develop new work, often drawing on local heritage and living memories. It grew out of the stories shared by the Social History Group at Royston Wardieburn Community Centre, where two groups of older people collaborated.
Because it's built from real life, the play pulls from the stories of local residents and covers a lot of ground. There's a Silver Knowes beach romance and anti-Thatcher demos from the 1970s, and it mixes humour and nostalgia with the slightly scary. People who've seen it have called it funny, thought-provoking and intergenerational, and that last bit is reflected in the cast: Citadel's professional performers share the stage with young actors from the Be Happy Performing Arts Company of Gorebridge.
