Author talk by Flora Johnston to celebrate her historical espionage novel 'The Berlin Passport Office' at Blackwell's Bookshop.
Flora Johnston is at Blackwell's Bookshop on Wednesday 18 November, from 7pm to 8pm, to mark the publication of her historical novel The Berlin Passport Office. It's a story of espionage, courage and quiet resistance, set in Berlin in 1938.
The plot follows Corran Rutherford, a Scottish author who travels to Germany under the guise of delivering lectures and writing about life under the Third Reich. Her real mission is to infiltrate the social circle of a high-ranking Luftwaffe officer and gather intelligence for MI6. Alongside her is Frank Foley, a British Passport Control officer who used his mundane bureaucratic role to help desperate Jewish citizens escape persecution.
It's a double-sided look at the era: the high-stakes world of intelligence on one hand, and the quiet, dangerous work of a civil servant on the other. Both are set against the backdrop of Berlin as the regime tightened its grip.
