The Piccadilly Sinfonietta perform Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 and a festive medley by candlelight in St Giles' Cathedral.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta are playing St Giles' Cathedral on Friday 11 December, as part of the cathedral's evening concert series. It's a candlelight performance, so the music happens inside the cathedral with the candles lit around you. The cathedral sits on the Royal Mile in the heart of the city, and the concert runs from 20:00 to 21:30.
The programme is built around Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, and they're joined by concert pianist Warren Mailley-Smith, who takes the lead on Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2. Those two make up the bulk of the evening, and they'll round things off with a traditional festive medley. It's a fairly broad spread of classical music to sit through in one go, with the Nutcracker and the Rachmaninov sitting on opposite ends of the mood.
The Sinfonietta is an ensemble of some of the UK's finest classical musicians, and they're a busy lot, giving more than 200 performances a year. They've become a regular presence on the British classical scene, known for their interpretations of baroque, classical and romantic repertoire, and Classic FM once described their work as 'stunning'.
