Piano recital by candlelight featuring Ashley Fripp, centred on Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata with works by Rachmaninoff, Chopin and Debussy.
Ashley Fripp brings a piano recital to St Giles' Cathedral on Saturday 30 January 2027, as part of the Evening Concert Series: Moonlight Sonata by Candlelight. The whole thing is played by candlelight, and the programme centres on Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata β the same piece is performed by other pianists on different dates across the series.
Fripp's set doesn't stop there. He opens with Rachmaninoff's C sharp minor prelude, then moves through the Moonlight Sonata and into a heavy dose of Chopin: the Berceuse, the Nocturne in E flat op. 9, the Fantasie-impromptu, and the Andante Spianato et grande polonaise brillante. Debussy's Clair de lune sits in the middle of it all, so it's a good mix of the Romantic and the Impressionist, with the Beethoven as the anchor.
Fripp is a British concert pianist who's played as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician across Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and Australia. He's performed in some of the world's most prestigious halls: Carnegie Hall in New York, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Philharmonie halls of Cologne, Paris, Luxembourg and Warsaw, the Bozar in Brussels, the Royal Festival, Barbican and Wigmore Halls in London, the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, the Palace of Arts in Budapest, the Megaron in Athens, the Gulbenkian Auditorium in Lisbon and the Konserthus in Stockholm. He's also won prizes at more than a dozen national and international competitions.
