Piano recital by Warren Mailley-Smith featuring Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and other classical pieces, performed by candlelight at St Giles' Cathedral.
Warren Mailley-Smith is playing a piano recital at St Giles' Cathedral on Friday 25 June, from 18:15 to 19:15. It's part of the Evening Concert Series, and the whole thing is performed by candlelight inside the cathedral on the Royal Mile.
The evening is built around Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, and the programme fills out from there with a good range of piano repertoire. You'll hear Grieg's Wedding Day at Troldhagen, Liszt's Liebestraume, Rachmaninov's Prelude in G minor, Debussy's Clair de Lune, Chopin's Raindrop Prelude and Fantasy Impromptu, and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue alongside the Beethoven. It's a broad sweep of the classics, so there's a bit of everything in one hour.
Mailley-Smith is one of the more active pianists of his generation. In 2015 he made headlines as the first British pianist to perform Chopin's complete solo piano works from memory across a landmark concert series, and he's since taken in more than 30 piano concertos, making his concerto debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. His career has taken him from Wigmore Hall to Carnegie Hall, with solo performances in Australia and Europe and tours of China and the USA, and he's played for members of the British Royal Family on several occasions. He gives more than 200 performances a year and is known for his technique, expressive depth and stage presence.
