An atmospheric classical concert by candlelight featuring Warren Mailley-Smith performing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata alongside works by Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Liszt, Gershwin and Grieg.
Warren Mailley-Smith plays Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata at St Giles' Cathedral on Friday 11 December, as part of the cathedral's candlelight series. It's a solo piano recital, and the Moonlight Sonata is the headline, but it's not the only thing on the programme: Mailley-Smith will play it alongside works by Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Liszt, Gershwin and Grieg. The whole thing is performed by candlelight inside the cathedral, which is the High Kirk of Edinburgh, right on the Royal Mile.
Mailley-Smith is a British concert pianist known for programming popular and powerful works from the great romantic and classical composers, and this set follows that pattern. The Moonlight Sonata is the anchor, but the rest of the programme pulls from a wide range of names—Chopin and Liszt for the high romantic, Debussy for the impressionist, and Gershwin bringing in a bit of the early twentieth century. It's a mix of the big names you'll recognise, rather than a deep dive into the obscure.
There's a VIP option available in pairs, which adds a glass of Prosecco, front-row seating, a signed CD, fast-track queue access and a five-minute chat with the artist after the performance. The concert is staged by CityMusic Promotions as part of the cathedral's candlelight series, which runs independently of the Fever Original Candlelight series. It's pitched as a festive celebration suitable for seasoned classical music enthusiasts and first-time concert-goers alike, and the organisers advise that the performance is not suitable for children under five.
