The Piccadilly Sinfonietta, with Warren Mailley-Smith on piano, play Grieg and Rachmaninov piano concertos by candlelight at St Giles' Cathedral.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta play St Giles' Cathedral on Friday 28 May 2027, as part of the cathedral's Evening Concert Series. It's a candlelight performance, and the programme pairs two of the most well-known piano concertos: Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor and Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor. Both are big, romantic works, and hearing them back-to-back in the same evening is exactly what the night is built around.
Leading the piano is Warren Mailley-Smith, who also serves as the Sinfonietta's artistic director. He's an acclaimed concert pianist known for his expressive playing and magnetic stage presence, and he gained international recognition in 2015 when he performed the complete solo piano works of Chopin from memory. The Sinfonietta itself was founded in 2017 and has since given more than 200 performances a year across the UK; under Mailley-Smith, it specialises in the concertos of the baroque, classical and early romantic eras.
The concert is part of the Evening Concert Series, which brings classical music to the historic setting of the Royal Mile. The cathedral's candlelit interior does a lot of the work here β Classic FM described the setting as 'stunning'. It's a romantic pairing of two of the most beloved piano concertos ever written, and the venue is wheelchair accessible with all ages welcome.
