A candlelit piano recital by Julian Trevelyan performing J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations and C.P.E. Bach's F sharp minor Fantasie at St Giles' Cathedral.
Julian Trevelyan brings Bach's Goldberg Variations to St Giles' Cathedral on Friday 26 February, as part of the cathedral's Evening Concert Series. It's a candlelit piano recital inside the High Kirk of Edinburgh, the Gothic church on the Royal Mile known for its crown steeple. CityMusic Promotions Ltd is presenting it.
The programme pairs the Goldberg Variations with C.P.E. Bach's F sharp minor Fantasie, so you'll hear two Bachs in one evening. The Goldberg Variations is one of the most famous works in the piano repertoire, a set of thirty variations on a simple theme, and having it played by candlelight in a space like St Giles' is a fair way to experience it.
Trevelyan is a pianist who's been playing across the UK and Europe since he was a teenager. He won the Long-Thibaud-Crespin international competition in 2015 at the age of sixteen, making him the youngest prize-winner in the competition's history. Since then he's taken prizes at the Leeds, Géza Anda and Horowitz competitions. He's appeared as a soloist with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, London Mozart Players and Worthing Symphony Orchestra, and has played with orchestras including the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, ORF Wien and the Baden-Baden Philharmonic.
