Winter concert by the Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra, with guest conductor Tim Espin, at Greyfriars Kirk.
Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra are back at Greyfriars Kirk on Saturday 28 November, their winter concert for 2026. It's a full evening of orchestral music, and they've brought in guest conductor Tim Espin to lead the night.
The programme is a broad one, pulling from a few different traditions. It opens with Ginastera's Four Dances from Estancia, which brings the rhythms of the Argentine pampas to the stage. Then there's MacCunn's Land of the Mountain and the Flood, a piece that's long been associated with the Scottish Highlands. Grace Williams follows with Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes, a medley of Welsh childhood songs woven into a single orchestral work. And the second half is held by Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2, one of the great late-Romantic symphonies, known for its long, sweeping melodies and the way it builds across four movements.
Between the Argentine dances, the Scottish landscape, the Welsh nursery tunes, and a Russian symphony, the night covers a fair bit of ground. It's a mix of the shorter, more characterful pieces in the first half and a full symphony to close it out.
