Free talk by labour historian Ewan Gibbs on the 1926 General Strike in an Edinburgh context, marking its centenary.
Ewan Gibbs is talking about Edinburgh and the General Strike of 1926 at Boroughmuir High School on Monday 26 October. It's a free session, and it comes at a particular moment: 2026 is the centenary year of the British General Strike, and Gibbs is framing that national event through an Edinburgh lens, linking it to its continuing relevance today.
Gibbs is a labour historian, and the talk draws on his new book, The Unmaking of the British Working Class, which came out in October 2026. The General Strike of 1926 was one of the biggest industrial disputes in British history, and while the national story is well-known, Gibbs brings the focus back to how it played out right here in the city. The session is organised by the Historical Association: Edinburgh & East Scotland.
