Monthly live music residency featuring Duke Duncan & The Hurricanes at West Nic Records, with a different support act each month.
Duke Duncan & The Hurricanes are back at West Nic Records on Friday 30 October, part of their new monthly residency, Duke's Joint. It's the last Friday of the month, and the night is built around two things: live music and record shopping. The live side is all original material from the Edinburgh act, and the record shop part is just as it sounds — you can dig through the crates while the music is going.
As for the music, the band describes their sound as a hedonistic psychedelic melange of funk, indie dance, swamp blues and fusion. That's a fair bit of ground to cover in one set, and it's the kind of description that suggests a night that doesn't sit still. The whole thing is original, so you're hearing their own songs rather than a set of covers.
There's a bit of a rotation to the nights, too. Each month, the bill is rounded out by a different support slot played by a different member of the band, so the opening act changes every time. The gaps are filled in by the West Nic bar staff on the decks, who keep the records spinning between the live sets. It's a residency that keeps its own people at the centre of it.
