Special Christmas descriptive tour for visually impaired visitors to experience life in Edwardian Edinburgh at Lauriston Castle.
Lauriston Castle is running a descriptive Christmas tour for visually impaired visitors on Sunday 6 December. It's a guided walk through the house, built specifically for people who can't see the rooms and collections in the usual way, and the theme is life in Edwardian Edinburgh at Christmas.
To get your bearings on the place: Lauriston is a 16th-century tower house that grew over the centuries, with Victorian extensions and interiors from the early 20th century. It sits in gardens that open onto views across the Firth of Forth, and the house and grounds hold a wide range of collections left to the city by the castle's last residents. The grounds are free to enter all year round, while the castle itself is open at set times by guided tour, with talks, creative workshops, film screenings and family activities on the programme.
This particular tour is designed for visually impaired visitors, who are invited to step back in time and experience life in Edwardian Edinburgh at Christmas. Rather than a standard walk-through, it's a descriptive tour, so the guide will be painting the picture with words as you go. It's a way to experience the house and its history without needing to see it to get the full sense of the place.
