The Big Shoogle, the world's rockiest Ceilidh band, play traditional Scottish music for dancing at the second night of the Laldie Ceilidhs' Countdown to Hogmanay.
The Big Shoogle are playing Assembly Roxy on Wednesday 30 December, as part of the Laldie Ceilidhs' Countdown to Hogmanay. It's the second night of the run, and they're the ones taking the lead for this one.
If you've never come across them, they're billed as 'the world's rockiest Ceilidh band' and describe themselves as a cross between The Rolling Stones and William Wallace. The sound is traditional Scottish music played in the style of Jimi Hendrix, and they mix that in with covers of pop and rock songs. It's a loud, electric approach to the ceilidh, so it's less about a quiet fiddle in the corner and more about a full band on stage.
The night is built around authentic, high-energy traditional Scottish dancing. Each session runs for about three and a half hours and combines the live music with calling ā the band's own dance instruction that walks you through the steps as you go. The aim is to welcome beginners and experienced dancers alike and mix the two on the floor, so you don't need to know your way around a ceilidh to join in. There's a licensed bar on site as well.
