First night of the Laldie Ceilidhs' Countdown to Hogmanay, with three and a half hours of ceilidh dancing and live music from The Cutting Edge Band.
The Cutting Edge Band are taking over Assembly Roxy on Tuesday 29 December for the Laldie Ceilidh, the first night of the Countdown to Hogmanay. It's the start of a three-part run leading up to New Year's Eve, with The Big Shoogle following on the 30th and the HotScotch Ceilidh Band taking the final, biggest night. All three are at Assembly Roxy, so if you're in the mood for a proper run-up to Hogmanay, you can do the whole set.
The Laldie Ceilidhs are run by dancers for dancers, and they describe this as an authentic, unpretentious Scottish dance experience. That means three and a half hours of high-energy ceilidh with live music and calling ā the calling is the part where someone walks everyone through the steps, so it's built to welcome beginners and experienced dancers alike. The organisers make the point that ceilidh is about having fun rather than perfection, so you don't need to have your footwork sorted before you turn up.
There's a licensed bar running alongside the dancing, and under-18s are welcome until 11pm, which keeps it open to more than just the late-night crowd. It's a long session, so come prepared to move for a good while.
