Free concert marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Manuel de Falla, with piano, violin and soprano, presented by the Cervantes Chair at the University of Edinburgh.
St Cecilia's Hall is hosting a concert dedicated to Manuel de Falla on Saturday 31 October, marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of one of Spain's most influential composers and musicians of the 20th century. The performance is presented by the Cervantes Chair at the University of Edinburgh, and it's one of three events the Chair is putting on to mark the upcoming centenary of the Generation of 1927, as well as the 90th anniversary of Federico García Lorca's assassination.
Falla and Lorca were friends and mentors to each other, a relationship of reciprocal inspiration that sits right at the heart of this. The Generation of 1927 — that circle of writers, poets, narrators and essayists — drew on popular traditions from an avant-garde perspective to forge a natural language centred on the reality of the things they evoked. Falla's music is a key part of that conversation, and this concert looks at him within that wider cultural moment.
The music is performed by a small ensemble: Ricardo Gosalbo on piano, Elena Jáuregui on violin, and Raphaela Papadakis on soprano. With those three, the programme can move from intimate instrumental pieces to songs with voice, so you'll hear Falla's work from a few different angles over the course of the hour.
