An autobiographical dance-theatre piece exploring sisterhood and grief, presented by Barrowland Ballet.
Chunky Jewellery comes to the King's Theatre on Wednesday 21 October, as part of a UK and international tour. It's a dance-theatre piece by Jude Williams and Natasha Gilmore, two single mothers who co-created the show with Olivier Award nominee Ben Duke of Lost Dog. The whole thing is presented by Barrowland Ballet, one of Scotland's most successful contemporary dance companies.
The show draws on a single year of their lives — two births, a death, and everything in between — and turns it into an honest, raw account of sisterhood and solidarity in grief. It's built from the fragments of their dreams and their children's musical instruments, and it blends theatre, dance, comedy, and a mix of self-penned and borrowed songs. The title comes from the chunky jewellery the performers wear on stage.
It's an autobiographical piece, so it's as much about the two women who made it as the stories they're telling. The Times called it 'relatable and moving — a winning piece of autobiographical dance-theatre'. It's aimed at ages 14 and up.
