Traditional Scottish dance ceilidh with a live band, with a free half-hour beginners' class before the ceilidh.
Deoch 'n' Dorus are taking over Assembly Roxy on Saturday 12 December for a Christmas Laldie Ceilidh, part of the Laldie Ceilidhs series that stages traditional Scottish dance nights around the city. The band provides the live music and calls the dances as they go, so every figure is taught on the fly and you don't need to know a single step to join in.
That's the whole point of the Laldie format: it's built for beginners to dance alongside seasoned ceilidh-goers, with the band walking you through the moves while they play. It's aimed at all ages and abilities, so it works as much for a first-timer as for someone who's been doing this for years. The night is designed to mix novices with regulars, and there's a licensed bar open throughout.
If you've never danced a ceilidh before, there's a free half-hour beginners' class at 7.15pm, with doors opening at 7.05pm. It's optional, so you can skip it if you're already comfortable, but it's there for anyone who wants to get the basics down before the main event kicks off. The ceilidh itself runs from 8pm to 11pm, with doors opening at 7.45pm for those arriving later.
