Piano recital of Chopin's most beloved works by candlelight, played by Warren Mailley-Smith on a Steinway grand piano in St Giles' Cathedral.
Warren Mailley-Smith brings a programme of Chopin to St Giles' Cathedral on Saturday 28 November, with the recital performed by candlelight inside the building. It's a single-pianist evening, and the music is played on a brand new Steinway Model B Grand piano.
The set is built around some of Frédéric Chopin's most well-known piano works. Mailley-Smith will play the Ballade No. 1, the Berceuse, the Raindrop Prelude, and the Nocturne in B flat minor. He'll also perform the Scherzo No. 2 in B flat minor 'Military', the Polonaise in A major, the Waltz in E minor (Op. posthumous), and the Waltz in E flat major. It's a broad run through the composer's output, mixing the more familiar pieces with some of the more dramatic ones.
Mailley-Smith is one of the UK's most distinguished pianists, known for his poetic touch, emotional depth and effortless technique. The recital takes place inside St Giles' Cathedral, a 12th-century building on the Royal Mile, with the music played beneath its Gothic arches and stained glass. The cathedral sits right in the middle of the city's festive streets, with restaurants and bars nearby if you want to make a night of it.
