Over-18s outlaw country night in which Henry Wagons and The Tennessee Studs reinterpret songs from Johnny Cash's 'American Recordings' albums.
Henry Wagons brings Cash - The American Recordings to The Voodoo Rooms on Saturday 22 May 2027, with his band The Tennessee Studs backing him. It's a tribute to Johnny Cash's American Recordings albums, the series he recorded with Rick Rubin between 1996 and 2006. Those records were a late-career renaissance for Cash, and they're the starting point for the whole night.
For Wagons, the connection is personal. He's an Australian outlaw country figure with a brooding baritone, and he says those albums are what inspired him to pick up the guitar and start his own brand of gothic country music over the last quarter century. The show works its way through the stories behind Cash's late-career run, with Wagons and his band re-interpreting the songs. You'll hear 'Solitary Man' (Neil Diamond), 'I Hung My Head' (Sting), 'The Mercy Seat' (Nick Cave), 'Hurt' (Nine Inch Nails) and 'One' (U2), alongside some of Cash's earlier favourites. The aim is to recreate the sonic depth and emotional poise of the original recordings.
It's a night built around that specific era of Cash's work, so if you're familiar with the American Recordings series, you'll recognise the territory. The set moves from the stripped-back covers that defined those albums to the older songs Cash carried with him. Wagons fronts the show with The Tennessee Studs, and the whole thing is strictly over-18s.
