Choral concert of Poulenc's 'Figure Humaine' and other French choral masterpieces by Calton Consort, closing its 25th season.
Calton Consort are performing Lumière et Ombre at Canongate Kirk on Saturday 12 June 2027, starting at 7:30pm. It's a French choral programme, with Poulenc's Figure Humaine as the centrepiece, surrounded by other French choral masterpieces. The concert rounds off the choir's 25th season, so it's a bit of a milestone for them.
The venue is Canongate Kirk, the parish church of Canongate in Edinburgh's Old Town and a congregation of the Church of Scotland. It was founded in 1688 and completed in 1691 under master mason James Smith, built through a bequest from the local merchant Thomas Moodie following an order by King James VII. Architecturally, it has a Dutch-style end gable and a small doric-columned portico, and its interior retains a cruciform layout, which is quite unusual for a post-Reformation Church of Scotland building. The space was extensively remodelled in 1882 with a pipe organ and central pulpit, and restored in 1991, with a new Danish-built Frobenius pipe organ installed in 1998.
