Choral concert marking the 25th anniversary of the Calton Consort, with Martin's Mass for Double Choir and highlights from the choir's first 25 years.
Calton Consort are marking their 25th anniversary at Canongate Kirk on Saturday 7 November, with a concert they've called Twenty-Five. It's a one-hour programme, and the choir members themselves chose the music, so it's a set that comes from inside the group rather than being handed down from the top. The whole thing is built around looking back at how the choir started and looking forward to where it's going.
The main piece is Martin's Mass for Double Choir, and around that they've gathered choral highlights from the last 25 years by Britten, Rachmaninov and MacMillan. It's a broad stretch of music, and having the choir members pick the pieces gives you a sense of what they've actually enjoyed singing over the years. The concert runs for an hour, so it's a relatively tight window of music rather than a long evening.
This is the first part of a wider anniversary season that carries on into next year. The second half comes on 12 June 2027 with Calton Consort: Lumière et Ombre, which rounds off the 25th season with Poulenc's Figure Humaine and other French choral masterpieces. If you're into choral music, it's a good way to see the anniversary play out over two different programmes rather than all at once.
