Berthaju + guests

Berthaju play The Hive Nightclub & Venue on Sunday 29 November, part of their first run of dates in the UK. They're a female-gaze indie punk band from Rotterdam, and this is one of the first times they'll be playing over here.

Their sound sits across alternative, indie pop, punk and pop rock, and the live set is fronted by female vocals. If you're not familiar with the name, the 'female-gaze' part of the description is something they lean into rather than just a label — it's right there in how they talk about themselves. They present their own biography as a satirical corporate memo: 'Dear Employees... Effective immediately, BERTHAJU will be rebranded to female-gaze indie-punk... we are also proud to expand our textile division, now working with award-winning models on our underwear line.' It's a bit of a wink at the corporate side of the music industry, and it gives you a sense of the spirit they bring to the stage.

Coming from Rotterdam, this is part of their first UK tour, so the Edinburgh date is one of their first opportunities to play for a British audience. The set will be fronted by female vocals, and the music pulls from a few different places — alternative, indie pop, punk and pop rock — so it's not just one thing. It's the kind of gig that works if you're into indie punk but also enjoy a bit of pop sensibility mixed in.

The show runs from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at The Hive Nightclub & Venue, 15-17 Niddry St, Edinburgh, EH1 1LG. Tickets are £11.
