The Edinburgh University Theatre Company stages Jonathan Harvey's coming-of-age play 'Beautiful Thing', set in 1990s South London.
Edinburgh University Theatre Company are staging Jonathan Harvey's Beautiful Thing at the Bedlam Theatre from Wednesday 28 October to Saturday 31 October. It's a four-night run in the Old Town, with the show running from 7:30pm to 9:30pm each evening.
Set on a South London estate in the nineties, Beautiful Thing is an urban fairytale and a coming-of-age story. It follows Ste and Jamie, teenage neighbours who are both being bullied: Jamie at school, and Ste at home by his violent father and brother. One night Ste seeks refuge in Jamie's flat, and the two strike up a relationship, discovering their sexuality alongside their friend Leah and Jamie's mother, Sandra. It's a play about friendship, rites of passage, and that particular feeling of being sixteen and in love.
The production is put on by the Edinburgh University Theatre Company, and it arrives more than thirty years after the play was first published. It's being staged at Bedlam, which is a unique, entirely student-run theatre in the heart of the city. The show runs from Wednesday 28 October through to Saturday 31 October, with the curtain going up at 7:30pm and the performance finishing around 9:30pm. Doors open from 7:00pm, so you've got plenty of time to get in and settle before it starts. Latecomers are admitted within ten minutes of the start, so it's worth arriving on time if you want to catch the whole thing from the beginning.
