Amateur orchestra Aurora Ensemble plays Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2, Dvořák Slavonic Dances and Andrée Concert Overture, conducted by Tim Espin.
Aurora Ensemble are playing at Stockbridge Parish Church on Sunday 25 October, with the music starting at 7:30pm. It's an evening of classical music that pulls from a few different corners of the repertoire, and it's being put on by an amateur orchestra based right here in the city.
The programme opens with Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2, a big, sweeping work that puts the piano and the orchestra on equal footing rather than having one lead the other. After that, the ensemble moves into Dvořák Slavonic Dances Op. 46, specifically the first four dances from the set — those lively, folk-inspired pieces that most people recognise even if they've never seen them on a concert bill. The night closes with Andrée Concert Overture, a shorter, punchy orchestral piece that rounds out the bill.
Tim Espin is conducting the ensemble, and Richard Beauchamp takes the piano soloist part for the Brahms. The Aurora Ensemble describes itself as an amateur orchestra with a particular aim: to promote classical music written by historically under-represented composers. This programme follows that mission, pairing the household names with a work that doesn't get nearly as much airtime as the others.
