Saxophone and piano evening by Dr Andrew Somerville and Helena Cheong, with music inspired by the natural world, as part of the Wind Story series.
Dr Andrew Somerville brings the saxophone to Stockbridge Parish Church on Wednesday 28 October, as part of the Wind Story series. He's joined on piano by Helena Cheong, and the two will be playing a programme they've titled Landscapes & Skies.
If the title gives it away, the music is all about the outdoors. The repertoire draws on pieces inspired by the natural world — rolling fields, open horizons and starlit skies. It's billed as pastoral music for saxophone and piano, so it's a night that looks towards the landscape rather than the city. Between the pieces, Somerville and Cheong will share short introductions to the music and the stories behind it, so you'll get a bit of context for what you're hearing rather than just a straight run of notes.
This is the third instalment in the Wind Story series, and it puts the saxophone in the spotlight. It follows the oboe of Hyun Ae Lim and the clarinet of Adam Lee, so the series is working its way through the woodwinds. Somerville is described as one of Scotland's most active saxophonists and educators, and he's paired here with Cheong on piano.
