Member-only exhibition of new portraits by Alicia Coombes, Director of The Edinburgh Drawing School, with a meet-the-artist session.
Alicia Coombes is showing a series of new portraits at The Royal Scots Club on Saturday 7 November, starting at 12:30. It's a member-only event, so you'll need to be a member of the club to get in.
Coombes is the Director of The Edinburgh Drawing School, and her training comes from the Florence Academy of Art, which she worked through across Italy and Sweden. She's a passionate proponent of the alla prima style — painting "at first attempt" — and she's drawn to a technique defined by its energy, spontaneity and decisive brushwork, in which the artist's hand remains visible in every stroke. That's the kind of work you'll see on the walls: portraits painted with a certain directness, where the brushwork stays on the surface rather than being blended away.
The show brings together a series of her new portraits, and the occasion is billed as a chance to meet the artist in person and hear the stories behind the pieces. If you've ever wondered what goes into a portrait or how a particular sitting came together, this is where you'll find out. It's a good way to see the work and hear about it from the person who painted it, rather than just reading a label on the wall.
