Creative workshop with artist Tessa Asquith-Lamb to make Christmas decorations using thin metal embossing techniques inspired by 1920s motifs.
Tessa Asquith-Lamb is running a Christmas decoration workshop at Lauriston Castle on Saturday 28 November, starting at 10:30. The session is all about making a set of embossed ornaments inspired by 1920s motifs, and you'll be working with thin metal rather than paper or card.
Asquith-Lamb describes the process as using simple cutting and thin metal embossing techniques. The designs themselves draw on 1920s cuties — think Scottie dogs and cheerful bells — so you'll be making things that feel more like a vintage Christmas than a modern one. You'll leave with a set of decorations you've made yourself, and you don't need to be an experienced maker to get stuck in.
The venue is part of the draw here. Lauriston Castle is a 16th-century L-plan tower house with Victorian extensions and early 20th-century interiors, left to the nation in 1926 by its last private owner, Mrs Reid. It's run by the City of Edinburgh Council and listed as a museum, with the rooms holding the diverse collections left by the castle's final residents. The house sits among gardens with views across the Firth of Forth, and the gardens themselves are free to enter all year round. The castle opens at set times via guided tour, and it also hosts talks, creative workshops, film screenings and family activities.
