Anesti Danelis: Live In Edinburgh

Anesti Danelis plays Monkey Barrel Comedy on Sunday 8 November, with the show starting at 7:30pm. He's a Toronto-based sketch and musical comedian, and if you've come across his work online, you'll know the musical side is where he spends most of his time. He's built a name as an award-winning viral internet hit-maker, and that's a good shorthand for what he does: he writes songs that are meant to be shared, the kind of things that find their way across the web rather than staying in one place.

What makes the set work is the range he pulls from. He doesn't stick to one sound; the songs run across rock, soul, hip hop, folk and pop, so you're getting a few different styles in one go. It's musical comedy in the proper sense — the music is as much a part of the act as the jokes are, rather than just a backdrop for them. If you're more of a comedy fan than a music fan, it's still a stand-up show at its heart, just one that happens to be sung.

He's picked up a fair bit of praise along the way, too. TheWeeReview.com called it 'hits a high note of excellent comedy', Deadline.com said he 'had people laughing non-stop', and MusicalTheatreReview.com gave him four stars. Between the viral songs and the reviews, you've got a decent idea of what to expect: a musical act that doesn't forget to be funny.

Tickets are £19.80, which includes the booking fee, and the show runs at Monkey Barrel Comedy on Sunday 8 November at 7:30pm.
