Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson talks with Scottish novelist Jenni Fagan about how reading has shaped her life and music, followed by a book signing.
Shirley Manson is back in Edinburgh on Saturday 28 November, at Teviot's Debating Hall. It's not a gig, though — the Garbage frontwoman is returning to the city for a conversation with the Scottish novelist and poet Jenni Fagan about the reading that's shaped her life and her music.
That's the core of the evening: Fagan will be talking with Manson about a lifelong love of literature that goes back to Flora Stevenson Primary School here in the city. They'll be looking at the literary influences that have worked their way into the lyrics of some of Garbage's best-known songs, as well as Manson's own approach to writing. The whole thing is described as being fuelled by the two of them working from a place of mutual admiration, curiosity and creativity.
The night is staged by the Scottish Book Trust in partnership with 432 Promotions, and it coincides with the Trust's annual Christmas Appeal, which gives brand-new books to children and families across Scotland through local food banks, children's hospitals and community hubs. Marc Lambert, chief executive of the Scottish Book Trust, called it a celebration of Manson, 'one of Scotland's most inspiring creative figures', and of the power of books.
