Candlelit concert of opera arias by Mozart, Bizet, Puccini and Verdi performed by The Piccadilly Sinfonietta and soprano Susan Parkes at St Giles Cathedral.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta are bringing A Night at The Opera to St Giles' Cathedral on Friday 30 October, with soprano Susan Parkes leading the way. It's a candlelight concert, so the cathedral's stone vaults on the Royal Mile will be lit by candles rather than the usual house lights. The set runs about 80 minutes and pulls from the big opera arias of Mozart, Bizet, Puccini and Verdi.
Among the pieces they'll perform are 'Nessun Dorma' and 'Vissi d'Arte' from Puccini's Turandot and Tosca, 'La Ci Darem la Mano' from Mozart's Don Giovanni, and 'Habañera' from Bizet's Carmen. It's a selection of the most recognisable moments from those composers, so you'll likely recognise a good few of them even if you've never seen a full opera in your life.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta was founded in 2017 and has played over 200 concerts a year across the UK, often in some of the country's more prestigious venues. St Giles is one of them — a Gothic landmark known for its crown steeple, and while it's an active place of worship, it regularly hosts classical and candlelight concerts like this one. Because it's on the Royal Mile, there are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby to make a proper evening of it.
