Concert by Fort Worth singer-songwriter James McMurtry, featuring his album 'The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy', with special guest BettySoo.
James McMurtry plays the Granada Theater on Friday, November 13, with BettySoo opening. McMurtry is a Fort Worth songwriter and singer, and he's coming in with his eleventh album, The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy, which pulls from his family's past and the hallucinations of his father, the writer Larry McMurtry.
Younger songwriters like Sarah Jarosz and Jason Isbell name him as a formative influence, and the record was produced by his old friend Don Dixon, who also produced his 1995 album Where You'd Hide the Body?. It includes covers of Jon Dee Graham's "Laredo" and Kris Kristofferson's "Broken Freedom Song." The cover art is a pencil sketch McMurtry found among his father's effects, which his stepmother Faye said looked like Ken Kesey's work from the 1960s.
